Alrighty, after a short night I took some time to get everything up and running this morning. You can see the results of my efforts here, here and here). It was indeed not dreamhost’s fault that the site wouldn’t show up, it was mine (D’oh) – to make a long story short: I used my second shell user to upload all the stuff and unfortunately home of user1 != home of user2, so I basically just uploaded it to the wrong folder (web was configured to use /home/user1/fcm2.info/ as www-root…and I uploaded the stuff to /home/user2/fcm2.info/ ). So thumbs up…everything up and running in less than an hour including 3 DBs, 3 subdomains and their respective dns-updates :-)
Conclusion so far:
- The speed of the server I’m on is awesome…
- It’s good to have shell access once again (the content move was quite easy this way, ssh to new server, connect to old server via ftp and download all the stuff, done)
- The Control panel is really something you need to get used to, I’d still rather have CPanel, but I guess I can live with it
- What am I complaining about anyway? 1 Year hosting including a top-level domain for 0.77$/month (first year)…w00t ;-)
cPanel is familiar but not so good if you want more control. Of course, we are talking shared hosting here so what I just said is moot (because you have no control with shared hosting). Anyway, their panel isn’t that bad. In fact, I quite like it despite the rawness of it. And they actually whipped this up themselves and managed something respectable with it.
Being able to host 3 domains and have shell and SFTP access is also a great puller.
I guess their reasons to use an own panel are: 1. cheaper (no license fees), 2. more secure (?!)
But you’re right, as soon as you’re used to it it’s just fine and I really do love the shell-access :-)
What’s the URL for the Dreamhost you are using?
I checked dreamhost.com but they did not have any prices near what you referred to.
I’m working on an experimental site, and prices like that I could afford.
Lo there Brian. You were in the right spot, but I guess you missed it. The are celebrating their 7th birthday so they handed out 777 such accounts (read more on Chu Yeow’s Blog) and I guess they were gone in no-time…
Aww shucks.
I lunked into the 1and1 US promo where I got a free account for a couple of years (have 4 domans hosted there now), but could have used another.
Oh well.
Oh well…maybe next time then :-)
