Hmm, today I received a package from one of my hardware retailers containing a lovely new Sony DRU700a DVD-burner. I had to send in my old DVD-Burner (Sony DRU500a), which I had bought in December 2002, cause it wouldn’t burn any discs anymore…and because my model was the oldest model of their line (the first Dual 4x DVD-Burner ever) and they didn’t have that anymore the sent me one of their newest models. The new Burner is a 8x/8x/2.4x/40x one (DVD-R/DVD+R/DVD+R9/CD-R).
Now I need to figure out if I should sell it (at a low price of around 80€ – can you believe that I had payed 399€ back in 2002 for the then top of the line model?) or keep it – “unfortunately” I already bought a new DVD-Burner (LG GSA4120B – 8x/12x/2.4x/40x (DVD-R/DVD+R/ DVD+R9/ CD-R)) the moment I had to send in the old one ;-)

I got a TDK 16x Dual Format DL DVD writer recently for SGD 149 (71.7584 Euros). Neat stuff :) Sell that old one while you still can, or at least give it to someone else who can use it. Burning at 4x is still acceptable (and could be better for longevity of the burned DVDs, or so I heard).
Hehe…as I said: the 4x (Sony DRU500a) is gone and replaced by the 8x (Sony DRU700a) courtesy of Sony’s customer service… :-)
Well, I think I’m going to keep it and add it to my 2nd pc as I don’t see me selling that beautiful thing for such little money…so I guess it’s parallel dvd-burning now ;-)
The current issue of the c’t magazine tested 16x DVD burners and the Pioneer A08 is the winning model, which I fortunately bought some weeks ago! ;)
c’t: “The error rate at 16x speed is EVEN within the spec.” Hehe I had to laugh, this seems by far not to be usual!
So maybe, you want to sell your Sony and buy a Pioneer instead! ;)
However, I have never burned a DVD faster then 4x before, because the error rate increases extremely at faster speeds. Or perhaps, I’m just too paranoid!
Hehe…I know what you’re talking about. To this day I didn’t burn anything faster than at 4x speed. This is due to two facts:
1. The media > 4x speed were very expensive – this changed recently though (so I guess I’ll start trying 8x speed as soon as my current load of discs is gone (which will take a while though – still > 150 in stock ;-)))
2. The high error rate at speed 8x or above – I would really dislike if the media was hardly readable, which would even get worse with time…
